Commercial HVAC Technician Responsibilities

Required Skills and Experience for HVAC Technicians
Essential Qualifications:
EPA Certification (Required)
Minimum 1-3 years of hands-on experience in commercial HVAC service
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
Vocational or trade school training preferred
Excellent communication and customer service skills
Strong mechanical and technical aptitude for diagnostics and repair
Hand tools and power tools proficiency
Mechanical lift operation
Recovery and vacuum systems

Physical Requirements for Commercial HVAC Work
HVAC Technicians are required to install, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on commercial rooftop HVAC units. These tasks are often performed independently and may involve working in challenging environments. Therefore, technicians must be physically capable of safely performing the following duties:
Lift and carry up to 70-100 lbs., including tools, parts, and equipment
Climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, and rooftops, often at heights exceeding 10 feet
Stand, kneel, crouch, and crawl for extended periods while accessing and working on units
Use hand and power tools with manual dexterity and precision
Operate equipment such as lifts, hoists, and ladders safely
Work in various environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, humidity, and confined spaces
Drive company vehicles to and from job sites as required
Maintain balance and coordination while navigating uneven surfaces or rooftop areas
Always use appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) to comply with safety regulations
Perform repetitive movements and sustain physical effort throughout the workday

How much experience is required?
What does a typical day look like?
Your workday begins at 8:00 a.m. by reviewing assigned jobs through our digital portal system. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, you’ll start with a brief 5-15 minute team meeting to coordinate priorities and share updates.
Most days, you’ll handle 3-5 service calls ranging from routine maintenance to complex troubleshooting on commercial HVAC and refrigeration systems. Larger installation projects may require your attention for the entire day.
Your regular schedule runs from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with on-call weekend responsibilities rotating approximately once per month among the team.
What advancement opportunities exist?
After 90 days, new hires can secure advancement opportunities, based on their skill level. Performance reviews occur on an annual basis.
High-performing technicians may earn the opportunity to advance to Field Supervisor and Senior Technician roles. To advance to the role of a Senior Technician, an employee must demonstrate good performance and remain with the company for at least two years.
